Fernando Alonso has revealed who he is backing for the title win this season speaking with reporters at the Red Bull Ring this afternoon.
He admitted that things can change so quickly from race to race as teams bring new updates and perform better than others depending on each venue – and so the title fight will likely be closer than ever come the end of the season.
However, while speaking to media this afternoon ahead of the second of two consecutive races at the Spielberg venue, the two-time world champion said right now, he’s backing Max for the title win this season.
“The favourite probably is Max because he’s performing better,” said Alonso.
“But things can change quickly depending on the performance of the teams and the updates to the car.”
He went on to tell Sky F1; “Today I think I will say Max, but things can change very quickly.
“With one retirement or one bad lap, race or whatever.
“We saw in Baku, if Lewis had been in the race, he was already in the lead.”
Red Bull and Mercedes have been battling neck and neck from the very beginning of the season, but as we head into round 9, the Red Bull team seem to have stretched their performance beyond the current potential of the Silver Arrows at their home circuit.
The charging bulls remain at the top of both the driver’s and constructor’s standings, with Mercedes planning to fight with all they’ve got to narrow the margin this weekend.
Proceedings kick off tomorrow (July 2) for FP1 at 10:30 am.
