“This one means a lot. Gracias, legend” – Russell
Fernando Alonso has made his thoughts on the future of Williams’ George Russell very clear after his most recent helmet swap following the Monaco Grand Prix.
The two-time world champion wrote a sweet message on his helment before handing it over to the young British Driver.
On it, he wrote; “George, you rock!! Future World Champ”.
Russell reciprocated the thoughtful gift by handing over the Williams helmet he wore on Sunday, marking the team’s 750th Grand Prix in Monte Carlo.
Taking to Twitter, a delighted Russell wrote; “This one means a lot. Gracias, legend”.
Alonso has voiced his opinion on Russell’s immense talent a number of times, while more recently, Williams Team Principal Jost Capito said the team will be looking to hold on to such a “fantastic driver”.
Speaking after Free Practice in Monaco, the Williams Team Principal said although he doesn’t think Mercedes will let him go, the team has plenty of time to discuss prolonging his stay with the Wantage-based team.
“I think George is a Mercedes driver for many years and I don’t think they will let him go”, he said.
“But we will see. We’ve got time to talk about drivers.
“We are not in the need now to discuss that.”
He went on to say that “he is doing a great job. He is a fantastic driver.
“We created a really good relationship and I think he would fit very well to Williams for our future as well and if he believes in our future there might be a chance to keep him.”
Racing resumes on June 6, for round 6 of the 2021 championship season, at the Baku City Circuit.
