AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly crossed the line fastest this morning to top the timesheets ahead of Qualifying this afternoon.
Red Bull’s Sergio Perez was in second when time ran out, while his teammate Max Verstappen was in 15th after going into the barriers at Turn 15 with 34 minutes to go – the same place Charles Leclerc crashed at yesterday.
The Dutch driver lost half of his front wing and was struggling to reverse, bringing about a red flag, which lasted ten minutes, but Verstappen did not return to the track as his RB16B is repaired ahead of this afternoon.
Mercedes’ Hamilton was in third this morning, after struggling through most of the session and reporting very poor grip over the team radio.
The weekend has been another difficult outing for the Silver Arrows so far, with Friday marking the first time Mercedes has been out of the top 10 since 2015 in a dry practice session.
The Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, who are having a good weekend so far, were in 4th and 5th respectively.
McLaren’s Lando Norris was 6th fastest, followed by Alpine’s Alonso in seventh, the second AlphaTauri of Yuki Tsunoda in 8th, Alpine’s Esteban Ocon ninth, and McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo closing out the top ten.
