Sergio Perez has landed at the top of the early timesheets in Monaco, after an impressive stint in his RB16B – a welcomed early result for the Mexican driver after a tough Spanish Grand Prix.
Perez completed the fastest lap of the morning in 1:12.487s on the soft tyres.
Following every so closely behind was the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz, who was just .1s off the fastest pace on the same tyres as Verstappen and the Mercedes’.
Four laps into his Monaco GP weekend, the second Ferrari of Charles Leclerc encountered gearbox issues and was summoned back to the pits – bringing an end to his session today and leaving him in P20 when the clock ran out.
Meanwhile, Verstappen slotted in third this morning with a 1:12.648s followed by AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly 0.4s off the quickest lap so far.
The Mercedes duo were in fifth and sixth at the end of FP1 – Hamilton .5s off the pace followed by Bottas .6s behind.
McLaren’s Lando Norris was in P7 – while his Aussie teammate fell down the order to P15 – followed by Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel in eighth, the second Alpha Tauri of Yuki Tsunoda in ninth, and Alfa Romeo’s Kimi Raikkonen closing out the top ten this morning.
