Red Bull’s Sergio Perez won the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix after an incredibly eventful race.
Joining him on the podium was Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel, marking his first podium for Aston Martin – and the team’s first podium in F1.
Filling the final step on the podium was the AlphaTauri of Pierre Gasly, after battling his way to the chequered flag wheel-to-wheel with the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.
During this race, disaster struck Verstappen while in the lead in the final laps today after he lost control of his RB16B on the main straight due to a puncture to his rear right wheel.
The Dutch driver crashed into the barriers and brought about a red flag – marking the end of his race.
Hamilton was in third from the restart but ultimately finished outside the points in P15 after he made a mistake at Turn One and fell way down the order – leaving spectators to enjoy a podium shake-up once more.
Speaking after the race, Sergio Perez (P1) said; “Normally Baku is pretty crazy.
“I have to say sorry to Max, it would have been incredible to get that one-two for the team.
“But at the end, it was a fantastic day for us. We were close to retiring the car but luckily we managed to finish the race.”
Meanwhile, a delighted Sebastian Vettel (P2) said; “A great day, I’m over the moon.
“We were not expecting a podium here.”
